Blakeney, Gloucestershire, is a natural gateway to the forest of Dean. It rises steeply from the distant Severn shore ½ mile away, its hillside is wooded and many of the stone houses are colour-washed. Thomas Sternhold, who with John Hopkins wrote the first vernacular metrical version of the Psalms, was born in a Blakeney house called Hawfield in the 16th century.
