Blackburn, Lancashire. An aspect of the town's industrial background is shown in the Lewis Textile Museum which traces the development of the spinning and weaving industries and contains early examples of machinery. James Hargreaves, who was born near Blackburn about 1720, invented a carding machine in 1760 and the spinning-jenny about 1764. These were among the developments which led to the Industrial Revolution. They came at a time when labourers' living standards were affected by bad harvests and the Corn Laws, and there were riots in Lancashire by those who saw their livelihoods further threatened by the introduction of machines. Hargreaves' inventions were smashed more than once, and in 1768 he moved to Nottingham. Richard Arkwright of Preston also removed to avoid such attacks. Later these inventions, as at Bolton, led to enormous expansion of the Lancashire cotton industry.
