Berkeley, Gloucestershire, in a pleasant valley of the Severn Estuary is about halfway between Bristol and Gloucester, just West of the main road. The little Georgian town is dominated by its formidable castle, surrounded by 14-ft-thick buttressed walls. Most of what can be seen from the fields dates from the 14th century, including the great hall, 60 ft long. Within the courtyard, however, still stands the solid Norman keep built in the reign of Henry II for the Fitzhardinges, whose family became Earls of Berkeley and still own and live in the castle. In its early history it had more than its share of gruesomeness. This was the scene of the frightful murder in 1327 of Edward II, instigated by his wife and the Earl Mortimer. The castle is open at certain advertised times to the public.
The fine Early English parish church with some original Norman features has a tranquil setting and some excellent Berkeley family monuments. By the chancel is the grave of Edward Jenner, discoverer of vaccination, who was born here in 1749 and came back to his home where he died in 1823. Today the town is famous for its manufacture of Double Gloucester cheese.
