Bellshill, North Lanarkshire, is a part of the main industrial centre of the parish of Bothwell, 11 miles South East of Glasgow, and it is often considered a part of Glasgow. It nonetheless retains its identity, which was founded during the period of 19th century immigration. Its industry was mainly built up on steel and coat, but was very badly hit by the Depression of 1919. In 1934, at the very depth of the Depression, unemployment reached the scale of seventy percent. Conditions have much improved since those days, and particularly after the Second World War. The presence of new industries in the neighbourhood of Bellshill and upon the Edinburgh road has reduced unemployment considerably.

Amongst the immigrants who came to Bellshill in the middle of the 19th century was a small minority that had a marked influence on industrial Scotland. This unit was composed of Lithuanians who originally came to Scotland as prisoners of war in 1855 after the Crimea. The Lithuanians, in those days part of the Empire of the Tsar of All the Russias, adhered, as they still do, to the Roman and Western rite, and they were much out of favour with the strict Orthodox circles then ruling Tsarist Russia. Many of the prisoners, at the conclusion of the Crimean War, preferred to stay in Scotland. They formed a group and, indeed, after a fashion, flourished at Bellshill. By 1887 they had their own priest, who spoke to them in their own language. In 1914 they published a weekly magazine, Iseivin Draugas, in their language. The title of their paper in English was Friend of Immigrants. It continued publication until the Second World War.
