Belford, Northumberland. This small town on the Al has long been a coaching stop for travellers. The centre of Belford climbs a long southward-looking slope off which run streets of stone houses and cottages with a good deal of modern housing growing up around the edges. Entering from the South, the visitor sees on the East the large park and honey-coloured façade of Belford Hall, designed by James Paine in 1756 for Abraham Dixon, manufacturer and merchant. It was partly remodelled by John Dobson in 1818. Further on, the long, low ivy-covered brick front of the old Blue Bell Inn encloses the view. Belford had a difficult history. It suffered repeated border raids, which accounts for the fact that most of its buildings are relatively modern. As late as 1639 it was described as “the most miserable, beggarly town, or town of sods, that ever was made in an afternoon of loam and sticks”. The houses were described as hovels with roofs of heather or sod. Later it became a foxhunting centre and now it is a market town. To the South West, Belford Moor on the way to Wooler provides splendid views towards the Cheviot Hills on one side, and the coast on the other.
