Bedale, North Riding. The main street widens where the market is held then narrows at the top of the slope where the Church of St Gregory and Bedale Hall occupy opposite and commanding positions overlooking the agreeable townscape. The church tower is 14th- and 15th-century work and has a porch on the south side. A room on the first floor was reached by a stair guarded by a portcullis, a defensive measure in case of Scottish raids. Walls in the nave may be Anglo-Saxon in origin; the east window was possibly brought from Jervaulx Abbey. The alabaster effigy of Sir Brian Fitzalan who died in 1306 is one of the earliest of its kind. The rear of Bedale Hall is brick and matches the rest of the Georgian-style houses in the market place, but its front faces the country and is formal, in stone, dating from about 1730. The great ballroom has a marvellous coved stucco ceiling with chubby figures fairly leaping over the cornice. The flying staircase has a bulb and umbrella balustrade. The house was built for Henry Peirse. This is splendid hunting country.
Snape Castle is 3 miles South, part ruin and part residence. The old chapel is preserved, a single room with Perpendicular windows and lively Dutch carvings of the life of Christ. Catherine Parr, sixth and last wife of Henry VIII, lived here.
