Ballantrae, South Ayrshire. A pleasant village situated on the shore at the mouth of the River Stinchar, 13 miles South of Girvan. Formerly a notorious haunt of smugglers, then a prosperous fishing port, but now a centre for agriculture and forestry, it is best known for early crops of potatoes from the seaside fields. Ruins of Ardstinchar Castle dominate the village and the fords at the mouth of the river. About 2 miles to the South is Glenapp Castle, the home of Lord Inchcape, and beyond that again the road runs through Glenapp with its woods and its little church, crossing the Ayrshire— Wigtown boundary at Finnart Bay in Loch Ryan.
