Aysgarth, North Riding. The beautiful falls - a series of three cascades - extend for ½ mile on the River Ure in Wensleydale. The foaming waters rush over great ledges or steps between limestone walls overhung with trees and bushes, where violets and primroses thrive in season. For the Upper Falls, the approach is down a road near the youth hostel to a single-arch l6th-century bridge, widened in recent times, where the view is enthralling. From the next bend in the road, a footpath leads to the Middle and Lower Falls. Cars can be left in the former station yard. Aysgarth's parish church, St Andrew's, is nearly 1 mile West of the village. It overlooks the bridge. Except for the west tower, which is medieval in its lower stages, the church is a product of 19th-century rebuilding. Two finely carved screens and a reading desk are believed to have come from Jervaulx Abbey.
