Atherstone, Warwickshire, is a small market town on the A5 and owes its relative importance to its position on the Roman Watling Street. It has several attractive 18th century houses. Its Grammar School boasts a l6th century charter. Outside the gabled coaching inn, the Red Lion, with its unusual Gothic windows stands an old milestone incised “100 MILES LONDON”. Though much of the parish church is modern restoration, it was originally the church of an Augustinian friary. Here Henry of Lancaster took the sacrament on the morning of the Battle of Bosworth. It has a good l5th century stained-glass east window. The Old Swan is a fine timber-framed house with an overhang supported by diagonal braces. It was once the centre of the felt hat industry. A curious game of football is still played on the streets on Shrove Tuesday, a custom dating back to the 13th century.
The ruins of Merevale Abbey are a little way West of the town, near a minor turning off the A5. They are worth the short, signposted walk across a field.
