Alfriston, Sussex. An ancient town which has among its treasures the first building to be acquired by the National Trust: the 14th-century Priests', or Clergy, House, an example of a pre-Reformation vicarage. It is a half-timbered and wattle-and-daub building which had fallen into decay at the turn of this century, but judicious restoration has left it much as it was originally, including a clay floor and soot-blackened timbers. These are original, although re-roofing was necessary when the house came into the keeping of the National Trust.
The parish church stands on an ancient Anglo-Saxon mound, and is often referred to as the “Cathedral of the Downs”. It dates mostly from the 14th century and has a central shingle spire in the form of a Greek cross. Internally it is of fine proportions, with lofty 14th-century arches and piers, triple sedilia, three piscinas and a fine sculptured reredos.
The Star Inn is one of the oldest in England, dating from the 15th century. An outstanding feature of this hostelry is its magnificently carved woodwork. The village also has the stump of a medieval market cross and a number of picturesque old buildings.
Not far from the village an Anglo-Saxon burial place was discovered during a building operation. More than 100 graves were excavated and skeletons and a variety of objects uncovered: many of these are now to be seen in the Barbican House Museum in Lewes.
