Amersham Old Town is popular with visitors and locals alike, with its half-timbered buildings, picturesque period cottages and a wonderful selection of exclusive designer-clothing and antique/craft shops. Old Town attractions include the award winning Amersham Museum, the Market Hall, St. Mary's Parish Church, the Memorial Gardens and the Martyrs' Memorial (see below).
Historically, Amersham was a centre for the 'Lollards'. These were Christians who wished to read the Bible in English, and were burnt at the stake during the years 1506 to 1522. 2011 marks the 80th anniversary of the unveiling of a special memorial to them in the corner of a field above Old Amersham, a short walk away. Each year a play is enacted in period costume remembering their bravery.
