Stokenchurch, Buckinghamshire. On the top of the Chilterns is this little village historically famous for its chair-making and surrounded by magnificent beech-woods. The chair factory (now closed) was once a Sunday school, established in 1769 by Hannah Ball, one of the original founders of these schools. She was a close friend of John Wesley and prepared the plans of the Wesleyan chapel, which still holds her writing table and her diary, as well as the clock which timed the services.

In the village is a l7th-century coaching inn and an attractive l2th-century church with Norman columns and a Norman nave. The five-bayed roof has tie-beams and carved spandrels. In the rebuilt transept is a canopied piscina. There is an ancient font and there are brass monuments to Robert Morle, dated 1410 and 1415, and to Bartholomew Tipping and his lady.
