Farnham, Surrey, is noted for its Georgian houses, as well as architecture of other periods; some of the best can be seen in Castle and West Streets. Willmer House, built in 1718, has a façade of cut and moulded brick, and there is much fine carving and panelling in the interior, it now houses a museum exhibiting finds from the district from earliest times, as well as 17^th- and l8^th-century furniture, clocks and costumes, and items connected with the work of local artists, craftsmen and inventors.

The castle, dating from the second half of the 12^th century, replaced one by Henry of Blois, Bishop of Winchester, destroyed at the order of Henry II. It has the distinction of having been occupied almost continuously until recent times; as a seat of the Bishops of Winchester until 1925, then of the Bishop of Guildford until 1956.

The present buildings are mainly from the 15^th to 17^th centuries but the court and wall date from the 12^th and 13^th century, though much extended and altered over the years; the keep is the most impressive part.

William Cobbett, the essayist and Radical politician best known for his Rural Rides, was born in Farnham in 1762, in the house now the William Cobbeti inn.
