Built in 1877 Brackenber Holiday Cottage provides the ideal base to explore The Lake District, Scottish Borders and Eden Valley. Situated in the secluded village of Shap between Kendal and Penrith, the holiday cottage is within walking distance of The Eastern Lake District National Park where you can explore remote Wet Sleddale, secret Swindale and follow the old track to Mardale and Haweswater. Unless you are on Wainwrights Coast to Coast path you will probably not meet anybody all day!.
Why stay with us?

The self catering cottage has been converted from the main hall of an old Victorian workhouse and offers spacious accommodation which is well equipped and includes facilities such as a washing machine, DVD, LCD TV with Freeview and central heating to ensure your comfort. The large secluded enclosed front garden is the perfect place to relax for breakfast with a landscaped patio area to the rear of the cottage which catches the evening sun, perfect for outdoor cooking on the family sized Webber gas BBQ.
In the village there are four pubs within one mile of the cottage all of which serve great food and local beers, there is also a newsagents, cafe, post office with cash point and supermarket so you dont need to use your car at all. The nearest towns are Kendal about 16 miles away and Penrith about 11 miles away both of which have supermarkets, lots of shops, restaurants and cinemas. The cottage is ideal as a base for cyclists with plenty of secure storage and quiet routes into the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales and Eden Valley, the local CTC group welcomes guest cyclists and has runs every Sunday and Wednesday some of which start from Shap.
The nearest Lake is Ullswater which is the second largest lake in the Lake District and offers some of the most breathtaking scenery in the UK and many activities including: superb walking; sailing; cycling; rock-climbing; fishing and organised cruises. Haweswater is even closer (6 miles) and far far quieter than the central lakes is the remote hidden gem in our opinion. It is situated at the foot of some of the largest mountains and most spectacular walking in the Lakes, with a great pub on the shore its a must visit.
