Abbotsbury, Dorset, is a long village with yellow-stone and thatched or slated cottages.
It has a famous swannery which has existed since 1393 at least. It is about ½ mile South of the village, on the lagoon formed by the Chesil Bank, and was created by the monastery which, practically vanished except for the tithe barn, stood just South of the village church. It now also has a few wild geese and variety of duck. Visiting duck are lured into a decoy to be ringed and for other research purposes.
St Catherine's Chapel, a l5th-century seamen's chapel standing on a hilltop, has a particularly fine vaulted stone ceiling. It is best reached from a turning close to the Ilchester Arms in the village. The terraces on the hillside were caused by the Anglo-Saxon strip and earlier “lynchet” cultivation system. The parish church, mainly 15th-and 16th-century, has an excellent early- 17th-century canopied pulpit, in which bullet holes bear witness to fierce Civil War strife locally, an unusual plastered chancel ceiling (1638), and in its porch an effigy (c. 1200) of an abbot of the monastery. Fragments only of the monastery, founded c. 1040 by one Orc, King Cnut's chief steward, to whom the King had given the manor, can be seen immediately South of the churchyard.
About 1 mile North West (just North of the B3l67) is an Iron Age fort called Abbotsbury Castle which has good views. And the road West North-West. to Bridport also provides glorious views, over low-hedged windy fields to the sea; South East to Portland and West to the great cliffs around Lyme Bay.
